Eating out with a toddler
We went from eating out most weekends to about four times a year. Not because of the tantrums. Because of being watched having them.
Updated August 2026
Saturday, quarter past six, the little bistro on the corner we used to love. Our food had just landed. My daughter was done sitting, and had been done for about eleven minutes.
So I did what I always do. Phone out, propped against the water jug, volume up because she will not watch it quietly.
And I caught the older couple at the next table looking at each other.
Not a rude look. Worse than that. A kind one. The sort of look that says we remember this bit, and also, we would never have done that.

What I had already tried
Crayons and the kids' menu. On the floor inside ninety seconds, every time, and then I am the person crawling under a table in a restaurant.
Ordering my food to go so my husband could eat his while it was hot. Booking the table for 5pm like a person in a retirement village. Timing the whole thing around a nap and then watching the nap go wrong anyway.
We went from eating out most weekends to about four times a year. Not because of the tantrums. Because of being watched having them.
The thing I had wrong
That was the mistake. A two year old is not built to sit still for fifty minutes with nothing to do, and no amount of firm voice was going to change that. She was not misbehaving. She was bored in a chair she could not get out of.
The phone worked because it gave her something to do. It just gave her the one thing that makes the next two hours worse.
She did not need to be told to sit still. She needed something to do with her hands that was not my phone.

What we take now
It is a busy board. This one is thirty-odd real fastenings sewn onto pages that zip together like a book. Buckles, laces, buttons, a clock face, letters and numbers.
It goes down flat next to her cutlery and it makes no noise at all, which is the part that matters in a room full of other people's conversations.

The obvious objection
This was my first thought too, and it is a fair one. Two things stop it.
The pages come apart. So I do not hand over the whole book at once. She gets one page while we order, another when the food comes, a third if the bill takes a while. It stays interesting because it arrives in installments.
And it zips shut with a handle. Nothing detaches from the page itself, so there are no small pieces to send skidding under someone else's chair. When we leave, it zips up and goes back in the bag in about three seconds.

Three Saturdays later
Same bistro. Board open on the table, one page at a time. She worked the buckles with her tongue poking out the way she does when she is concentrating.
My husband and I finished our plates. Both of them. Hot. And then we did the thing we had not done in over a year and looked at the dessert menu, because there was no reason to rush.
On the way out a woman at the window table said, "she has been so good." I have thought about that sentence more than I would like to admit.

"We love our busy board book! Our daughter also loves it and it keeps her busy with various pages of activities. We have taken it to the restaurants, cafes, parks and while on the pram. Our daughter loves it and another great feature is that it will grow with her throughout her toddler years!"

"My toddler loves the busy board! His favourite thing at the minute is the zips and laces. We take it out and about with us and is just a life saver when at restaurants!"
Kiran G.VerifiedIf you are at the four-times-a-year stage, I would not start with a rule about sitting still. I would start with something for her hands that is not a screen.
We use the Toddla busy board. It goes flat on the table, it is silent, the pages come apart so you can hand them over one at a time, and it zips shut when you leave. Most orders arrive in about a week, so if you have something booked, give yourself that.
We have been out four Saturdays in a row now. I have stopped scanning the room.
